The North Star: A Game in One Minute

Why instant play games are the north star for a board game site: one link is the room, zero sign-up, five seconds to pull an opponent to the table, and why "fast enough to not want to close" is what keeps players.

Every product needs a north star metric. YiBoard's is: from opening the link to making your first move, under one minute. Instant play games are not a feature, they are the product philosophy. Browser play exists to compress the distance between 'I want to play' and 'I am already playing' down to almost nothing.

Why one minute matters

Board games lose players before the game, not during it. Someone wants to play, opens the site, and if they have to register, matchmake, and wait, that game probably never happens. Getting to the board in under a minute means putting the game in front of them before the impulse fades.

The same logic applies offline. Two friends want a quick game of gomoku. Who downloads an app and adds each other as friends first? One link sent, the other side clicks and plays. That is the whole value of instant play games.

One link is the room

YiBoard's core design is link-as-room. You create a game, send the link to your opponent, and they open it straight into that board. No sign-up, no matchmaking queue, no 'opponent is offline'. The link is the board.

This solves a real problem: the biggest barrier in board games is not the rules, it is gathering two people. Link-as-room drops the cost of gathering to sending one message.

How zero sign-up stays fair

People ask: without registration, how do you know the opponent plays fair? The answer is server-side arbitration. Every move is validated on the server, so editing your client cannot change the board state. Registration manages identity; the referee manages fairness. They do not have to be bound together.

The ranking system also works without sign-up: real grades (Grade/Dan, starting at 1200) give every game meaning. Lose and you want a rematch, win and you want to protect your rank. That is retention.

The one-minute path to the board

Break 'open link to first move' down and no step should have friction:

  • Open the page: no ads, no pop-ups, no cookie walls
  • Create a game: one click, get the link
  • Send it: WeChat, email, anything
  • Opponent opens it: the board is there, first move now

Under a minute in total. That is one minute to play, productized: not faster loading, but making the act of starting a game lighter.

Fast enough to not want to close

Retention is not about feature count. It is about being fast enough to not want to close. Open and play when you want to play, leave when you are done, come back next time you want a game. Browser play wins on every single 'playable right now'.

**Can zero sign-up guarantee fair play?** Through server-side arbitration. Every move is validated server-side, so client edits cannot cheat. Identity and fairness are separate; registration is not a prerequisite.

**How many games per link?** One link is one game. Want more games, send more links or use in-site matchmaking. Link is the room, the room is that game.

**Is it comfortable on mobile?** Yes. The board zooms, a move is one tap, mis-taps are rare, and the experience matches desktop.

**Can I review the game after?** Basic matches are free. Deep replay and AI analysis sit behind membership, but open-and-play is always free.
