Gomoku vs Omok: Same Game, Different Names

Gomoku is the Western default. Omok is the Korean and Japanese default. Same game, same rules, different names. Where each name is used, why, and how to start playing today, plus you.

Gomoku is the default name in the West. Omok is the default name in Korea and Japan. Same game, same rules, same board. The difference is cultural naming, not play. Here is where each name comes from, where each is used, and how to play today, plus you.

Where the two names come from

Gomoku comes from the Japanese gomoku narabe, where gomoku means five stones and narabe means line them up. The game spread to the West via Japanese cultural exports and stuck as Gomoku. Omok is the standard Korean romanization of the same Japanese word and is used interchangeably in Korea and parts of Japan.

Where each name shows up

The split is mostly about community, not rule. Gomoku dominates English-language AI engine discussions, Facebook groups, and Gomoku.com. Omok dominates Korean board game channels, Japanese five-in-a-row apps, and Korean go communities. YiBoard covers both, so searching either term gets you to the same game.

  • English search: Gomoku, Five in a Row, Five in Line
  • Korean and Japanese search: Omok, オモック, 五目並べ
  • Mobile app branding: Connect 5 (mostly iOS and Android)
  • Chinese search: 五子棋, 五子连珠

Zero rule differences

Placements, win conditions, and board size are identical. The YiBoard game engine treats every player the same regardless of which search term brought them in.
