How to Win at Gomoku: A Practical Checklist

Seven moves you can use right now, from taking the center to building an open four, plus a diagnosis of why you keep losing to the AI.

Winning Gomoku takes discipline, not genius. The seven moves below work immediately and do not depend on your rank. Best tried while playing a match at yiboardgame.com.

  • Take the center first move for the most lines
  • Make a live three or four each move to keep sente
  • Build an open four (winning) instead of rushing five
  • Block the opponent’s live three at its development point
  • Use double three or double four for two threats at once
  • Do not abandon your own development to block a weak shape
  • In the endgame, check if VCF can reach five

Why you keep losing to the AI

YiBoard’s AI runs alpha-beta pruning in the browser, searching many layers within 500ms. It will not miss your live three and will not give up sente. You usually lose because one move hands over the initiative or blocks the wrong point. Pause a beat and ask how many threats your move makes.

One common mistake

Many players rush to five, play a four that is easily blocked, and hand over sente. Remember: a four only forces a block; the win comes from an open four or a double threat. More on this in the attack and defense guide.

FAQ

What is the fastest beginner gain?

Make a live three or four every move to hold sente. More useful than memorizing joseki.

Why is the AI so hard to beat?

It misses no threats and gives no sente. Treat yourself as managing threats, not just making five.

Does a double three always win?

Not always, but two simultaneous threats beat one block, so the win rate is high. Note black’s double three is forbidden under Renju rules.
